Critique #3 (Dora The Explorer)

Oh yes. I’m actually doing a critique on Dora. I absolutely DESPISE Dora.

But i’ll get onto that in a second, for now, i’m going to be honest. This isn’t a random critique. I’ve actually had this planned since last night, so it’s more of an assigned critique, but! Just the same, it’ll still be interesting. I promise.

The episode I’m doing is Dora the Super Spy. in this episode Dora wants spy gear. First problem. WHY THE HELL DOES A SIX YEAR OLD WANT SPY GEAR?!? I mean c’mon it’s BAD ENOUGH that she travels all over the world without any parents. I’m sorry if i have her age wrong. But seriously. She’s  too young to be going anywhere, or purchasing any spy gear by herself. It’s WAY too unrealistic. Next thing i noticed, this gets kids to be like “oh well you don’t have this so you can’t do that.” Sounds a little vague but, i got this idea from when Dora and Boots made it so Swiper couldn’t get through the bush door and Boots said “Well, now he can’t get through because he doesn’t have secret spy gear.” Next thing: rocket sneakers? That’s so unrealistic I’mhaving trouble coming to terms with the concept. Since when does a six year old HAVE A CELL PHONE?! I didn’t get my first phone until 8th grade and even then that didn’t last long.. but besides the point, SHE’S SIX (or close to it) WHO IS SHE GOING TO CALL?!?! Next thing: She’s attempting  things that would get a REAL child of her age: A. into trouble & B. possibly hurt. She took a grappling hook and used it to rappel down a side of the mountain just make sure Swiper doesn’t get the cupcakes. This also leads me to believe that this show promotes non-sharing. Everyone else gets a cupcake but Swiper doesn’t? What if he asked nicely? Hmm?

It amazes me. The things we let our children watch are actually sometimes bad for them, even if it is educational, the message can be so… woven in, therefore making it impossible to notice how awful it is until you actually sit down and watch it with your kids.

Those must have been some really good cupcakes… I hate that show too, so very very annoying. I hope it gets taken off the air by the time I procreate! The more kiddie shows I watch with my niece or read about the more I can relate to those that don’t let their kids watch TV. One blogger I read decided to get a bunch of videos of shows he doesn’t mind the urchins watching and they don’t watch regular TV, I think he might be onto something…
